Every translation should be reviewed at least two times by a translator and then by another linguist and project manager. In some cases (especially, medical, legal, promotional, or other texts of vital concern), translation should undergo multi-level editing and a comprehensive QA process. "To err is human." "He is lifeless who is faultless." Any translator, no matter how professional, can miss some mistakes or misunderstand something. That's why we need two heads.
We offer different types of translation verification depending on the client's requirements and budget:
Linguistic editing is done by a professional linguist native in the target language and with good command of the source language. The editor thoroughly checks spelling, grammar, style, consistency and completeness of translation, accuracy, fluency, and appropriateness for the target audience, and adherence to the glossary and style guide.
Professional editing is done by a specialist in the given area, one of our Subject Matter Experts, who checks accuracy and consistency of terminology, abbreviations, and other elements of text, as well as completeness of translation. Medical texts are reviewed by a practicing physician, technical texts by an engineer, legal texts by a lawyer, IT texts by an IT specialist, and so on. All experts are native target language speakers with specialized higher education and work experience in the related field, as well as a working knowledge of the source language.
Complex editing involves two editors—one linguistic and one professional— in the translation. Sometimes, this work can be done by one specialist who has both in-depth linguistic and rich technical/medical/other experience and education.
Proofreading is usually a post-desktop publishing revision, intended to eliminate any possible errors that might have occurred during layout. This includes review and correcting of typos, misspelled words, grammatical errors, layout issues, translation accuracy, and consistency.
Quality Assurance is provided by another professional linguist who performs final checks of the final translation. This includes quick review of all text manually as well as automatically with various QA tools.
Assessment is independent post-layout linguistic review and evaluation of previously translated and typeset material. The reviewer fills out an evaluation report, recording all possible errors by categories and types (critical, major, minor; spelling, grammar, term, etc.), counting number of mistakes, and giving comments.
Reverse Translation When translation quality is critical, we recommend this type of check of translation accuracy. Once the translation into the target language is done and proofread, another translator without the source text translates the translation back into the source language. Then this translation is compared with the original and if the new translation renders the meaning of the original source text correctly, the translation into the target language is considered accurate.
