About the project
We were tasked with localising a wonderful project into 26 languages in honour of Japanese artist Yoko Ono and her ‘Wish Tree by Yoko Ono’ project. The initiative is a tribute to Yoko Ono on her 90th birthday. It is a virtual ‘Wish Tree’ where people from all over the world can leave their wishes online and, in collaboration with One Tree Planted, have real trees planted.
The challenge
We really enjoyed the challenges that this project presented. The requested languages included several that are uncommon in the localisation industry. For example, Inuktitut is the native language of about 40,000 people in northern Canada, so it has a limited number of translators. We also translated the site into Arabic, Chinese, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese (BR), Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog/Filipino, Tamil, Tibetan, Turkish and Ukrainian.
The solution
We always select translators and proofreaders for our projects carefully, and this one was no exception. Putting together a multilingual team with rare languages to collaborate and, ultimately, achieve the goal was incredibly exciting. All our linguists are always eager to tackle new projects and were more than willing to help.
The result
So far more than 16,000 people left their wishes in multiple languages at https://wishtreeforyokoono.com and more than 18,000 trees were planted.
