About the project
We received an urgent project to translate 3,250 pages (around 685k words) in the legal domain from Polish to English. Our task involved optical recognition of three poor-quality scans in PDF with handwritten content and delivering translated text in a Word document.
The challenge
The content was in three separate PDF files, provided to us incrementally. We had to deliver the translated text as a single file. Tight timeline: we had three weeks to deliver the final quality translation. The documents featured handwritten annotations and numbers that needed verification.
The solution
To meet the deadlines, we had to stick to the overlapping workflow: The process began with optical character recognition (OCR) to convert scanned text into editable content, followed by file preparation and machine translation (MT) to expedite the translation phase, and then human post-editing was carried out using a CAT (computer-aided translation) tool to refine the output of the MT. Quality Control was the final step to ensure consistency and quality and check the resulting text was aligned correctly. The team included a project manager, three OCR specialists, and nine linguists.
The result
Adopting a well-structured workflow and leveraging MT, we delivered accurate, high-quality translations within the stipulated timeframe. We could expedite the workflow and capitalize on available resources by dividing the three files into smaller segments, allowing multiple post-editors and other specialists to work simultaneously. This collaborative approach ensured a harmonious blend of linguistic expertise and technical proficiency, resulting in a successful, timely outcome.
